Wheel Changing

It's a good idea to practice this when you've time and are relaxed, so that if you need to change a wheel on a wet night in November, at least you'll know what you're doing.

  1. Put on the handbrake and in first gear.
  2. Get out your spare tyre, the vehicle jack and wheel brace.
  3. Remove the wheel trim. Use the wheel brace to loosen each wheel bolt/nut on the affected wheel by about half a turn.
  4. Put the jack head in the jacking point on the wheel. Jack up the wheel so it's an inch or a few centimetres off the ground.
  5. Take off the wheel bolts and take off the wheel.
  6. Put the spare wheel on, put the bolts on and tighten them until they’re just holding the wheel firmly.
  7. Lower the jack and remove it.
  8. Tighten one wheel bolt securely with the wheel brace and tighten the one diagonally opposite, repeat with the remaining bolts. Put back the wheel trim.
  9. When you’ve finished, put the damaged wheel and tools back in the car and get the flat repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
