Tyre Checks

Tyre pressure should be checked when the car hasn't been driven for half an hour. Look at your car handbook to see what the right levels should be – front and rear tyres can be different and the pressure level can depend on whether your car is loaded or not. The pressure marked on the side of the tyre is the maximum, not the running pressure.

  1. Taking each wheel in turn, unscrew the valve dust cap and put it somewhere safe. Push the nozzle of the gauge into the valve so you can't hear any air escaping. Take the gauge from the valve and read the pressure.
  2. To boost the pressure use your pump or go to the nearest garage.
  3. Check the pressure again. If it’s too high, gently press the pin in the centre of the tyre valve to release a little air. Check the pressure is correct and if so, replace the dust cap.
  4. Don’t forget to check the spare tyre too. Inflate it to the highest of the pressures recommended for your car.
