Jump Leads

Got a flat battery? Get a friend or neighbour whose car battery is charged and some jump leads and hopefully you'll be on the road again soon.

  1. Get the cars close together making sure the batteries are near to one another. Turn everything off.
  2. Take one end of the red jump lead and connect it to the positive terminal on the flat battery.
  3. Take one end of the black lead and connect it to the negative terminal of the charged battery.
  4. Take the other end of the black lead and connect it to a bolt or bracket on the engine block of the car with a flat battery.
  5. Make sure the leads aren't in contact with moving parts on either engine.
  6. Start the car with the flat battery so it's running properly.
  7. Turn off the engine of the car that's charging yours and disconnect the jump leads in reverse order.
  8. The battery will take a while to charge up again so in the meantime use the electrical equipment as little as possible.
